Deaf Donkey Productions presents Loot by Joe Orton
A masterpiece of black farce, Loot follows the fortunes of two young thieves. Dennis works for an undertaker. Hal's old Mum has just died. The pair rob the bank next door to the funeral parlour and return to Hal's home to stash the loot. With the police hot on their trail, the boys decide to hide the stolen cash in the coffin that contains Hal’s late mother, Mrs. McLeavy. While old Mr. McLeavy is busy cataloguing the funeral wreaths and fending off the advances of Fay, his late wife’s nurse, Hal and Dennis stuff the corpse in the wardrobe and the money in the casket. With the money hidden in Mum's coffin, there's no place for Mum whose body keeps re-appearing at the most inopportune times. When Inspector Truscott of the Yard turns up, the already thickened plot goes topsy-turvy.
Loot saw its premiere in London in 1966 and remains one of the most potent works from this master of the macabre. Orton’s shock tactics are a way of alerting us to the hypocrisy of a society in which greed, gain and lust are masked by religious piety and veneration for authority.
